Does your e-cig taste burnt? Here’s some information!
Does your vape taste burnt? Then you’ve come to the right place. In this post, we’ll go through why your electronic cigarette tastes burnt and share the best tips for preventing and counteracting your e-cig tasting burnt. With a few simple tricks, you can ensure that your e-liquid tastes the way it should.
Regardless of whether you’re new to or experienced in vaping, this phenomenon can occur. Fortunately, the problem is easy to solve and prevent for future use.
Priming - Let the cotton absorb the e-liquid
Priming is an English vape term for allowing the cotton inside the coil a chance to absorb the e-liquid. We strongly recommend that you always prime your coil when installing a new coil in your e-cig. Depending on which e-cigarette you have, always wet the coil’s cotton before installing the coil in its housing. Once you have thoroughly moistened the cotton, you can install the coil and then fill it with your e-liquid. We also recommend filling the tank to approximately 70-80%. If you fill it with too much e-liquid, there is a risk that your vape will not have enough air space and will become "flooded" with e-juice.
A few drops of your e-liquid are usually enough to wet the cotton. In the image below, you can see which areas we recommend wetting. Once you have moistened the cotton, installed the coil, poured your e-juice into the tank and screwed everything together, we recommend inhaling through the mouthpiece without turning on the vape. This allows the e-liquid to penetrate deeper into the cotton and moisten it even more. Repeat this several times and your e-cig should then be ready to use.
If you don’t prime your coil before using your electronic cigarette, there is a very high risk of burning the cotton in the coil, which in turn results in a burnt taste. If you don’t have time to prime the coil, you can install it in the e-cigarette, pour in your e-liquid and let the e-cigarette stand for at least 10-15 minutes, preferably even longer.
It is important to be careful with the first few puffs and not inhale too forcefully at the beginning. Make sure that the coil can absorb the e-liquid before you start vaping properly.

The coil has reached the end of its life
It is also very common for a coil to have been used up. This results in a drastic reduction in flavour, and eventually you may notice that it tastes burnt. A simple solution is to replace your old coil and install a new one. Don’t forget to prime the new coil!
It is also worth keeping in mind that some e-liquids use up coils faster than other types of e-liquids. So if you are used to a coil lasting a week and another one only lasts a few days, don’t worry. One example of e-liquids that consume coils much faster is sweet e-liquids. Sweet e-liquids contain substances that cannot withstand combustion at excessively high temperatures.
Always use the correct wattage recommendation
Each coil has a recommendation for the wattage at which you should vape. For example, between 20-30 watts, the coil works best and is expected to have the longest lifespan. If you exceed the wattage recommendation, the coil will have a shorter lifespan, run out faster and may burn, resulting in a burnt taste. Avoid this by always following the wattage recommendation for your coil. Most coils indicate the recommended wattage on the product, but with a quick Google search you can quickly find the answer if you are unsure which wattage to use. This varies from e-cigarette to e-cigarette.
MTL Pods - Priming? This is how we do it!
Today, many people use MTL devices for which you can buy ready-made pods. These are very clever and have made it very easy to change the coil. Many people who vape today have never changed a coil and have only used ready-made pods. A pod contains a tank with a built-in coil, meaning you replace the entire unit. It can be a misconception that these do not need to be primed, which is incorrect. It is important to prime your coil here as well, even though the process is considerably simpler.
How do I prime my MTL pod?
The process is simpler than priming a DTL device. Separate the pod from your vape, if necessary. Then pour the e-liquid into the tank (pod) and inhale firmly through the mouthpiece without turning on your vape. This allows the cotton to absorb the e-liquid and become moist. Let the pod rest for a few minutes, and then you are ready to vape without a burnt taste!
