My E-cigarette Tank Is Leaking - What Should I Do?

Leaking e-cigarette tanks & clearomizers are one of the most common problems in the e-cigarette world, and there are usually simple solutions that can fix your leaking e-cigarette tank. We have all experienced liquid leaking out of the tank at some point, causing us to lose e-liquid that we could otherwise have vaporized. Don't worry, it is a normal problem, and in this post we will list how you can fix a leaking tank and why the tank leaks.

Why Is My Vape Leaking?

There are several potential reasons why your vape is leaking. Here are some of the most common:

1. Incorrect filling: Do not fill your vape with too much e-liquid. Filling approximately half the tank is a good guideline.

2. Hard & intensive use: Using your vape carelessly without letting it rest between puffs from time to time can burn your coil and ultimately cause leaking.

3. Damaged seals: The seals in your vape can become damaged or worn over time, which can lead to leaking.

4. Incorrect coil: If you use a coil that is not compatible with your device or that has been subjected to wear, it can lead to leaking.

5. Changes in air pressure: If, for example, you are traveling by plane, changes in air pressure can cause your vape to leak e-liquid. This can also happen if you travel up a high mountain.

6. "Wrong" type of e-liquid: It is more common for leaking to occur when using a juice with a high PG content. This is because PG is a thinner liquid and can more easily pass through seals and other weak points in the device. VG, on the other hand, is thicker, which makes it less likely to leak.

7. High heat: High temperatures, which occur during use, can also lead to leaking. Be careful when it comes to the temperature of your vape.

Why Is My Disposable Vape Leaking?

One of the best things about disposable vapes is that they are essentially completely leak-free. This is because the e-juice in disposable vapes is wrapped in a small piece of textile and then wound around the unit's coil. This type of "wick" is optimal for avoiding leaks.

Despite this, you may experience leaking from your disposable vape. If this happens, we can give you one piece of advice: Puff more gently - A disposable vape is a small vape with tight airflow. If you puff too intensely, you can draw the e-liquid out of the "wick." It requires somewhat gentler handling than a traditional e-cigarette.

It also happens that disposable vapes are overfilled, especially cheaper variants. In that case, e-liquid may have leaked out during transport, for example. This is nothing you need to worry about; simply let your disposable vape rest for a while before using it.

Pay Attention to How You Fill Your E-cigarette Tank

When filling your tank, be careful about how you pour in the e-liquid. If you are new to electronic cigarettes, you may not have full knowledge of where to pour in the e-liquid (see image). Make sure to pour the e-liquid into the tank and not into the central "hole."

Example of how to fill your e-cigarette tank

Hold the tank at an angle so that the e-liquid runs along the glass, and make sure not to fill the entire tank. We usually recommend that our customers only fill the tank to 70 - 80%. The coil loves being soaked in flavorful e-liquid, but we recommend filling the tank to only 70 - 80% to prevent it from becoming overfilled with liquid.

Leaving an air gap creates a vacuum and keeps the e-liquid in place in the tank. It is important to close the airflow before opening the top. Otherwise, the pressure in the tank is released and liquid can enter the coil (if the airflow is open). Therefore, you should close it before opening the top to avoid leaking.

If you have ever taken apart your e-cigarette tank, you may have seen that there are O-rings (seals, rubber rings) that ensure no e-liquid escapes. When reassembling the tank, be careful that the O-rings do not get pinched and become damaged.

If you have a damaged O-ring, your e-cigarette tank will leak and you will need to buy new O-rings for your tank.

Also make sure to tighten the threads on your e-cigarette tank properly after taking your tank apart. Do not overtighten them, but tighten the threads firmly.

The Right Coil for the Right E-liquid, the Right E-liquid for the Right Coil

You should also consider what type of e-liquid you are using, as well as which coil you are using. There are countless different e-liquids and coils available, and here we will provide tips on which e-liquid to use with different types of coils (ohms).

If the coil cannot vaporize the e-liquid effectively, the e-cigarette tank will become flooded and subsequently start leaking. Therefore, it is important to choose the right e-liquid for your e-cigarette tank.

Higher-resistance coils (above 1Ωohm) imitate the way a regular tobacco cigarette works and tend to have smaller airflow holes to make the "draw" tighter and provide an authentic experience similar to smoking a cigarette.

For this type of coil and vaping, we recommend an e-liquid with a high PG percentage (50PG/50VG), as propylene glycol is more fluid and makes it easier for the coil to vaporize the e-liquid.

Low-resistance coils (below 1Ωohm), also known as sub-ohm vaping, can vaporize thicker e-liquid, for example an e-liquid with a 70VG/30PG ratio. The higher the wattage you vape at, the better the vegetable glycerin in the e-liquid is vaporized. E-cigarette tanks in this category tend to have larger airflow holes, and we STRONGLY recommend that you close/lock the airflow to the e-cigarette tank when filling the tank with e-liquid, as it is common for these types of e-cigarette tanks to leak when the airflow is not closed.

NOTE! There are exceptions where a coil can be sub-ohm but very small, such as the eGo AIO 0.6ohm coil, for which we recommend preferably using 50VG/50PG or 60VG/40PG e-liquids, as the coil is small and cannot vaporize thicker e-liquids such as VG70/PG30.

Solutions for a Leaking E-cigarette Tank

1. The coil can leak if it is worn out. If the cotton in the coil is used up, the e-liquid will seep through. Solve this by replacing the coil. You can tell that it is time to replace the coil when you experience a "burnt" taste.
2. Check that the O-rings are not damaged.
3. Make sure that all parts of the e-cigarette tank are properly tightened.
4. Inhale more slowly and take smaller puffs so that the coil/tank has time to keep up. The harder you draw, the more liquid enters the coil, and it can easily become flooded.
