We have all been new to e-cigarettes at some point and looked for information about how an electronic cigarette works. In this post, we will explain how an e-cigarette works and how it is constructed, so that you can gain insight into how the different components of an electronic cigarette work together to create vapor.
First, we will explain the purpose for which an electronic cigarette should be used and emphasize that you should not use e-cigarettes if you have no need for them.
An electronic cigarette should be used as an alternative to smoking tobacco and should be considered a tool to help you, as a former or current tobacco smoker, find a healthier alternative.
NOTE that we do not encourage anyone to start using electronic cigarettes if they have no need for them, and that electronic cigarettes are not healthy, but rather a healthier alternative to tobacco cigarettes!
How an electronic cigarette is constructed
An electronic cigarette consists of several different components that work together. Depending on the brand, an e-cigarette may differ in appearance from others, but it is worth knowing that all components work in the same way. There are different variations of so-called coils and e-liquid tanks, which can result in different effects and sizes.

An electronic cigarette has three important components that work together to create vapor. Below you will find useful information about the three components, so that you as a reader can gain an understanding of how an e-cigarette works.
The battery (the mod)
The battery is the component that supplies power to the electronic cigarette. There are different battery sizes, and there are also electronic cigarettes that require external batteries that you install in the electronic cigarette yourself and remove when it is time to charge them.
There are also batteries that are built into the e-cigarette and charged via a USB cable, which is usually included in the box.
The tank (e-liquid reservoir)
The purpose of the tank is to store the e-liquid. There are also different sizes of e-liquid reservoirs, measured in milliliters (for example: 2ml, 3ml, 5ml). It is also worth knowing that there are different e-liquid reservoirs with different diameters, for example: 25mm.
The size of the tank is worth keeping in mind if, for example, you want to install your tank on another mod. Usually, all e-cigarette tanks are equipped with a 510 thread that screws onto the battery. If you are putting a new tank on your battery, make sure that all the components fit!
The coil (the vaporizer)
The purpose of the coil is to vaporize the e-liquid inside the reservoir. The coil is also installed in the tank, and inside the coil there is cotton that absorbs the e-liquid and wets the heating elements in the coil so that vapor can be produced. It is very important to keep the coil wet at all times.
If there is too little e-liquid in the reservoir, the coil cannot absorb enough e-liquid, and the cotton in the coil will burn, resulting in a burnt taste when you inhale from the electronic cigarette.
There are different coils that fit your electronic cigarette, and coils have different properties. When talking about these properties, we refer to the resistance in ohms. As a general rule, you can think of a coil with a resistance below 1.0 ohms as producing more vapor while consuming more e-liquid. Such a coil is called sub-ohm, whereas a coil with a resistance above 1.0 ohms produces less vapor while consuming less e-liquid per inhalation. This type is usually called MTL (mouth to lung) and is recommended for smokers who want to switch to vaping.
