It’s a recurring question we receive, and there can be various reasons why you, specifically, get a sore throat when you vape.

Have you drunk enough water?

PG (Propylene glycol) is an ingredient in e-juice and is dehydrating, so you need to compensate by drinking water. If your throat is very dry, vaping can "hurt"; drink more water, it’s good for you.

Are there certain types of flavors that cause you to get a sore throat? Not everyone can vape all flavors; e-juice flavors are very personal. Citrus in particular is a flavor that produces a "throat hit", which can make your throat hurt when vaping. Try a flavor that doesn’t contain citrus.

Is your e-juice boiling instead of vaporizing?

This is more common among advanced users who use an RDA, but it can also happen in a regular tank. For RDA users, increase the wattage or switch to smaller coils if you are using lower wattage. If you use a regular tank, it is recommended that you follow the instructions for the coil; the manufacturer usually states the recommended wattage on the coil or its packaging.

Is your coil burnt?

Have you checked that your coil isn’t burnt? Using a burnt or very worn-out coil can cause a sore throat. If the coil is burnt, replace it immediately.

Is your nicotine strength too high?

The idea behind e-cigarettes is that you should gradually reduce your smoking of regular tobacco cigarettes and then lower the nicotine strength. Using a higher nicotine strength than you’re used to can cause a sore throat; it can also be a sign that you should try a lower nicotine strength.

Is your e-cigarette too powerful?

When you’re quitting smoking, huge clouds of vapor may seem impressive, but you may not be used to inhaling that much vapor and therefore not exhaling as much either. This can cause a sore throat and make you start coughing. We always recommend starting with something that resembles a regular tobacco cigarette in terms of resistance and vapor production, so that you can then get used to more and more vapor—or perhaps you’ll be satisfied with the one you started with.

Do you have the right e-juice for your e-cigarette?

Too much PG in an e-juice used at higher wattages can cause your throat to hurt when you vape. If you use 50/50 VG/PG e-juice and vaporize it at 60W or more, it can hurt your throat a lot because PG is very thin and creates a "roughness" in the throat that can hurt if you have an overly powerful e-cigarette. Switch your e-juice to one with a 70/30 VG/PG ratio and it will be easier.
